Five time Juno nominee John Stetch and his virtuosic jazz trio will bring the 2009-2010 Arts at Grace concert series to a rousing conclusion on Sunday, May 30 at 3:00 p.m. at Grace Episcopal Church, 13 Court Street in Cortland. The program for the Greer Memorial Concert explores the Great American Songbook. Stetch has appeared at the Monterey, Saratoga, and Tanglewood jazz festivals. He has been called "one of the most brilliant and underrated jazz pianists working today" by Clavier Magazine. Nicholas Walker will be on bass and Greg Richie on drums. Audience members are invited to meet the musicians at a reception after the concert. There is no charge for admission.
Born and raised in Edmonton, Canada, John Stetch is well known in the current jazz world. He has been frequently recorded by the CBC and has appeared on several NPR programs such as Marian McPartland's "Piano Jazz", and "Jazz Set" with Branford Marsalis. After moving to New York City, Steinway Artist Stetch performed at some of the most prestigious jazz venues, and now has 10 commercially released CDs, filled with mostly original works. Stetch's new CD and current group – "TV Trio" explores a more recent chapter of the Great American Songbook – television themes of the 70's and 80's. The album stayed in the top 20 for almost 2 months on the U.S.A. JazzWeek radio chart.
Nicholas Walker is an accomplished musician who brings a broad range of training and experience to the string bass: classical and jazz, modern and baroque, solo recitals and chamber ensembles. Not only does Walker have noteworhty academic credentials, including a Fullbright, but he also has played with jazz masters like Illinois Jacquet and Wynton Marsalis. An inventive composer, Walker features the string bass in solo, chamber music, and improvisational contexts. His new fantasy for bass and piano was featured in a concerto debut with Chris Kim and the Cornell Chamber Orchestra in the spring of 2010. Currently Mr. Walker is a full-time faculty member teaching double bass at Ithaca College and he also teaches bass at Cornell University.
Greg Ritchie originally hails from Saint John, New Brunswick and now resides in New York City. A performance scholarship brought him to Montreal's McGill University jazz program where he received his Bachelor of Music with high distinction in performance in 2002. Since moving from Montreal to New York, he has toured North America, Europe and Japan with various groups. He has recorded and toured extensively with Canadian jazz artists as well as the ‘The Story, a New York City NYC based collective which he co-leads.
The Arts at Grace is a community outreach effort of Grace Episcopal Church assisted by many individual and business contributors from the greater Cortland community. Its mission is to provide wonderful music at no charge to any one who wants to hear it. Thus, admission to all Arts at Grace is always free even though donations are welcome.
